About the researcher

Dr Sharif Mowlabocus is a Senior Lecturer (Associate Professor) based in the School of Media, Film and Music at the University of Sussex, where he has been researching LGBTQ cultures since 2001. He has published a number of journal articles and edited chapters, as well as a book. He teaches classes to undergraduate and Masters students, and also supervises PhD students.

Sharif is currently working on a new book project that explores gay politics and LGBTQ culture. He has a wealth of experience and has interviewed hundreds of people over the course of his research. As a gay man, he prides himself on being a part of the community he studies and he believes in using research to leverage positive social change for queer folk.

Sharif has undertaken research on behalf of HIV/AIDS organisations and LGBTQ community groups in the UK and has also provided consultation to media organisations regarding the representation of LGBTQ people on television and radio.

Sharif currently spends his time between the UK and San Francisco, where his husband is based. He is training hard for the AIDS LifeCycle 2019 and when he is not dressed up in lycra he enjoys good food and trashy movies. You can contact Sharif via email at: s.j.mowlabocus@sussex.ac.uk.
