About the Interview

This project uses 1-2-1 interviews to learn more about the experiences of LGBTQ employees. Interviews can take place face-to-face or via Skype.

The interviews are often a lot of fun and participants find them interesting and enjoyable. You don’t need to worry about ‘saying the wrong thing’ or ‘making a mistake’ – because there are no wrong answers or mistakes.

The following guide gives you an idea of what to expect when you attend an interview.

  • The preliminary chat. It is important that the researcher feels confident that you have understood the interview process, how your data will be handled and what confidentiality measures will be employed. You’ll go through some basic by important information with the interviewer and have a chance to ask any questions you might have. This section concludes with you signing the participant consent form and all of this information is designed to protect you and ensure you understand the  research process and what you are being invited to participate in.
  • The interview. The interview will begin with the researcher switching on the audio recorder (unless the interview is taking place over Skype in which case, it will be switched on for the preliminary chat) and asking you some background questions about your history (where you grew up, when you moved to the Bay area etc). The questions then move to discussing your identity as an LGBTQ person, your engagement with LGBTQ culture and any prior engagement with Pride. Next up are a few questions about work and any staff networks that you know of or are a member of. Finally, we discuss your opinions, attitudes, experiences and thoughts regarding the sponsorship of Pride.

The interview is semi-structured, which means the researcher has a set of questions but can also deviate from them. This means you don’t have to worry about ‘sticking to the question’ or ‘saying the right thing’ – the researcher will guide the conversation.

At the end of the interview, the researcher will switch off the recorder and then confirm contact information with you in case you wish to get in touch after the interview.

And that’s it! Interviews normally take 60 minutes, but if you budget for 90 minutes then you shouldn’t be late for your next appointment.
